Understanding Cosmetics Ingredients

International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI)

Last updated January 3, 2023

Sometimes beauty industry jargon can be confusing, masking a product's true ingredients and effectiveness. We often do not recognize ingredients on labels. And it is not just you and me, it’s 81% of Consumers.

This is where Skin Match Technology comes in and helps break down the official cosmetics list and all the ingredients that are inside beauty products in various ways.

Consumers tend to have a higher conversion rate for products with recognizable or understandable ingredients than products that fail to define what they contain clearly.

  • 33% of women would not buy the product and look for another product instead.

  • 55% of women will look at another product to see if they understand the ingredients better.

  • 44% of women would research the ingredients on their mobile phones while shopping in the aisle.

But why do cosmetics companies not just use the regular name of a cosmetic ingredient?
The INCI system was established in the early 1970s by the Personal Care Products Council (former CTFA, Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association) and the list is maintained by the Personal Care Products Council. INCI names are used in the United States, the European Union, China, Japan, and many other countries, for listing ingredients on cosmetic product labels. With few exceptions, the INCI labeling names in all countries are the same.

Currently, there are more than 50’000 ingredients in the INCI list, which is the most comprehensive listing of ingredients used in cosmetic and personal care products.
